California Mountaintop Coalition

Welcome! We are the California chapter of the nationwide organization The Mountain Coalition.
From the main Mountaintop Coalition Website: "The Mountaintop Coalition was founded in 2018. It is composed of students and scholars of the ancient Mediterranean world and its reception (broadly defined) with a shared interest in advancing the professional goals of Classicists who identify as members of ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Such interests will include scholarly approaches to the study of race and ethnicity in antiquity, but the group’s activities will focus on practical issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in professional settings."

Events

We go to your communities for free, in-person activities.

Families, school-aged children, and middle school students are welcome to join our series of programs introducing the ancient Greek and Roman worlds through fun-filled activities in your own communities in the Bay Area for free! We especially like to visit communities where access to Classics is limited.
Snacks are provided.

Celebrate like a Roman!
It's the holiday season, and not just for us! The ancient Romans would have celebrated Saturnalia around this time thousand of years ago, along with their many other festivals throughout the year. Learn about the Roman military celebrations, the mythology behind their holidays, make laurel wreaths, play games, and exchange small gifts. Immerse yourself in the traditions of an ancient culture. There will be snacks.

Omens and Oracles!
How do we predict the future? How do we get advice and make decisions?
While we might simply flip a coin, the ancient Greeks and Romans had many interesting ways, including oracles, bird-watching, going to a random line in a book, and more. They might release a chicken and observe how it eats, or observe how smoke blows. You will learn all about their techniques. In the second half of this event, you will go on a scavenger hunt! Become a divinator yourself and hunt the library for signs to uncover the future like the Greeks and Romans.
There will be snacks.

 Pompeii + Mosaic-making!
What can a giant volcanic eruption tell us about the lives of people thousands of years ago?
Discover the secrets of Pompeii through beautiful art showing scenes from Roman mythology and daily life. Join us to make your own mosaic and explore ways we can use art to communicate!
 There will be snacks.

 Mythology + Comics!
How did the Greeks explain rainbows? Seasons? Annoying pests? The human imagination often runs free and wild when observing our vast and complex world. Create your own comic with your own fun explanation for any natural phenomenon, just as the Ancient Greeks did thousands of years ago. I will explain a few of the most intriguing ones, and then it’s your turn to imagine and create!
There will be snacks.
